Treatment Options
Basically there are only four different options available to both men and women for treating their hair loss: drugs and medications, topical treatments, hair systems, or hair restoration surgery. Each option has its own unique list of pros and cons.
Drugs and Medications
There are many products available but only Propecia®, a drug for men only, and the topical medication Rogaine® (aka minoxidil) are approved for use by the FDA. While they can slow the hair loss process and in some cases even grow hair in the crown area of the head, they do not work on the frontal hairline. If use is discontinued, hair loss will resume and the hair that was saved will be lost. Propecia and Rogaine are best used by those with mild hair loss and often in conjunction with other treatments.
Topical Treatments
Topical treatments can improve scalp and hair conditions and minimize the appearance of hair loss. Scalp treatment systems usually consist of shampoos, conditioners, scalp/hair serum, and styling products. They cleanse and fortify the scalp, strengthen and protect hair ultimately making hair fuller, thicker, and healthier-looking. Some even remove and block DHT. Cover-up sprays and applications can do a surprisingly good job of masking and minimizing a person’s appearance of balding and thinning hair. They work by reducing the contrast between a hair loss sufferer’s thinning hair and scalp or by temporarily bonding to existing hair increasing it volume and fullness. Topical treatments can be used by anyone with or without hair loss.
Hair Systems
Wearing a hair system (also known as hairpieces, hair replacement systems, toupees, wigs, hair extensions, hair progressions, and hair enhancements) is an affordable and safe method of quickly regaining a full head of hair. Quality systems provide a natural appearance, are comfortable and virtually undetectable. Wearers can swim, shower, ski, and sleep with the system securely attached to the head. They are ideal for those with moderate to extensive thinning or balding and those who want to fill in thin areas or have a full head of hair.
Hair Restoration Surgery
Going under the knife is a scary thought for some people and cost prohibitive for others. While hair transplants can provide a natural solution for those with minimal hair loss, there are several factors to seriously consider before choosing this option. Hair removed from the “donor area” never grows back leaving that area even thinner than before. Few people have enough hair in the donor area to adequately cover a large area of the scalp. Consequently, as their hair loss progresses after surgery, they most likely will not be able to fill-in the newly bald areas
